Frequently asked questions
Why are premiums so different between insurers if the benefits are the same?
Basic insurance (KVG) is identical at every insurer by law — the benefits catalogue doesn't differ. The premium depends only on the insurer, your premium region, the deductible (CHF 300–2,500) and the insurance model (family doctor, HMO, Telmed). According to official FOPH 2027 premiums (adults 26+, standard model, CHF 300 deductible, no accident cover), the cheapest and most expensive insurer in the same premium region are on average about CHF 128 a month apart — between CHF 73 and CHF 240 depending on the region.
Do I need a health check to switch insurer?
No. Every insurer must accept you for basic insurance regardless of age or health status, with no health questionnaire (source: priminfo.admin.ch). This does not apply to optional supplementary insurance (VVG).
What is the deadline to switch health insurer?
Your cancellation must reach your current insurer by 30 November at the latest; what counts is the arrival date, not the postmark. The switch then takes effect on 1 January.
Does comparing with SwissHealthSaving cost anything?
No. Comparing is free. We're not a broker and take no commission from insurers — we compare and inform based on official FOPH premium data, we don't provide advice.
Which insurer is cheapest for me?
That depends on your premium region, age, chosen deductible and model. The cheapest insurer in one canton can be more expensive than average in another. Use the calculator with your postcode to compare your personal premium.
