What is driving costs
In the second quarter of 2026, basic insurance costs per person rose by only 0.4% year on year, after 2.9% in the first quarter. Some areas grew much faster, though: home care (Spitex) by 15%, psychologists and psychotherapists by 11%, outpatient doctors and physiotherapy by 7% each.
The differences between cantons are large: in the second quarter, cost growth ranged from +9.6% in Schaffhausen to −8.7% in Zug. Insurers' reserves rose to CHF 8.6 billion by early 2026.
How far apart insurers are
By law, basic insurance (KVG/LAMal) covers exactly the same benefits at every insurer. Only the price differs. Our analysis of the official 2026 premium data shows how far offers in the same premium region are apart (adults, standard model, CHF 300 deductible, without accident cover, average of all 42 premium regions):
| Comparison within a premium region | Per month | Per year |
|---|---|---|
| Cheapest vs. most expensive insurer | CHF 120 | CHF 1,438 |
| Cheapest insurer vs. average | CHF 48 | CHF 580 |
| Smallest gap (one region) | CHF 61 | CHF 728 |
| Largest gap (one region) | CHF 229 | CHF 2,753 |
Your insurance model also changes the price: averaged across all cantons, the HMO model costs around CHF 64 per month less than the standard model in 2026, the family doctor model around CHF 63 and Telmed and other models around CHF 59 (adults, CHF 300 deductible, without accident cover).
What you can compare before 30 November
Your insurer must inform you of your new premium by 31 October at the latest. You can cancel your basic insurance by 30 November with effect from 1 January; what counts is that your cancellation reaches the insurer by that date, not the postmark.
- Your new 2027 premium for the same basic insurance at other insurers in your premium region
- Your premium with a different deductible between CHF 300 and CHF 2,500
- An alternative model such as family doctor, HMO or Telmed
