Switching health insurer in Switzerland for 2027: how far apart premiums are
Published 30.09.2026
Within the same premium region, the cheapest and the most expensive Swiss health insurer are on average CHF 128 per month or CHF 1,539 per year apart in 2027, up from CHF 120 in 2026. By law, basic insurance covers exactly the same benefits at every insurer. That is the result of our first analysis of the official 2027 premium data (adults, standard model, CHF 300 deductible, without accident cover).
Price gaps between insurers in 2027
Since the announcement on 29 September 2026, every insurer's approved 2027 premiums are known. On average, around 24 insurers offer the standard model in each premium region. We analysed how far their prices are apart in all 42 Swiss premium regions:
| Comparison within a premium region (2027) | Per month | Per year |
|---|---|---|
| Cheapest vs. most expensive insurer (average) | CHF 128 | CHF 1,539 |
| Cheapest insurer vs. average of all insurers | CHF 50 | CHF 595 |
| Smallest gap (one region) | CHF 73 | CHF 871 |
| Largest gap (one region) | CHF 240 | CHF 2,881 |
For comparison: according to the federal government, the average adult premium rises by CHF 22.80 per month in 2027. The price gap between insurers in the same region is on average more than five times this year's increase.
Increases vary widely from insurer to insurer
The government reports an average increase of 5.0%. Depending on insurer and region, however, the change in the standard model (CHF 300 deductible) ranges from −10.1% to +16.5%. For 51 of 1,019 offers the premium stays the same or falls; for 26 it rises by 10% or more. For 80% of offers the increase lies between +1.0% and +7.2%.
The ranking shifts too: the cheapest insurer of 2026 is still the cheapest in 2027 in only 23 of 41 comparable premium regions. In 7 regions it is no longer among the three cheapest. In the most extreme case it costs CHF 47.50 per month more in 2027 than the new cheapest offer, or CHF 570 per year.
Deductible and model change the premium as well
Besides the insurer, your deductible (franchise) and insurance model affect the price. The figures show the average of all 42 premium regions for 2027 (adults, without accident cover):
| Option 2027 | Average premium per month | Difference vs. standard/CHF 300 per year |
|---|---|---|
| Standard model, CHF 300 deductible | CHF 572 | – |
| Alternative model (family doctor, HMO, Telmed), CHF 300 deductible | CHF 508–512 | CHF 721–766 lower |
| Standard model, CHF 2,500 deductible | CHF 452 | CHF 1,439 lower |
A higher deductible lowers the premium but raises the amount you pay yourself when you need care: with a CHF 2,500 instead of a CHF 300 deductible, you carry up to CHF 2,200 more in costs. Alternative models require you to contact a specific first point of care (a family doctor, an HMO practice or a telephone medical service). Which combination fits depends on your personal situation.
What you can compare before 30 November
Your insurer must send you your personal 2027 premium by 31 October at the latest. You can cancel your basic insurance by Monday, 30 November 2026 with effect from 1 January 2027; what counts is that your cancellation reaches the insurer by that date, not the postmark. For adults, deductibles in 2027 still range from CHF 300 to CHF 2,500.
